Windows app version 1.0.0 free open code
Island
A small glass island at the top of your Windows screen for the things you use most. One key brings it: Ctrl+Q.
Try it here
Press Ctrl+Q, or tap the screen below. Then 1 to 6 change the page, Left and Right move, Enter opens and Esc hides it. In the app the pages change with Tab, but a browser keeps Tab for itself. This is a picture of the app, so nothing here touches your computer, and the names on it are made up.
Free, and the code is open
Island is free. Anyone who wants it can download it and use it. There is no account and no ad, and it never contacts the internet.
The whole code is on GitHub under the MIT licence, and that is on purpose. I want people to play with it, change it and take it further, and then send me what grew out of it. Open an issue or a pull request on GitHub, or write to [email protected] with a link to your version.
Getting it
- Download Island-Setup.exe (about 54 MB). The link always gives the newest version. Double-click it: it installs for you only, without asking for administrator rights.
- Windows will warn you. The installer is not signed with a paid certificate, so Windows shows "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then Run anyway. Every release lists its SHA-256 checksum in SHA256SUMS.txt if you want to check the file first.
- What it needs: Windows 11 on an ordinary x64 computer. Version 1.0.0 was made and tried on one Windows 11 laptop; nobody knows yet how it does on Windows 10 or ARM.
- Updates: there are none by itself, because it never goes online. Download the installer again from the same link.
- Privacy: no account, no analytics, no ads. What it sees about your open windows and programs stays in memory.
How it was made
The idea came from the island at the top of a phone's screen. I wanted something like it for Windows: a small thing you can shape to the way you work, that is useful every day and makes the desktop look better.
For the software I used only Claude. Island was built with Claude Code from written work orders.
